About the piece
A bespoke jewelery chest in walnut
Fold was commissioned as a wedding gift from a husband to his wife. Designed and made in my workshop in Sweden, it was delivered to a private client in the Middle East.
The interior was developed around the jewellery it would hold. The dimensions and number of individual pieces informed the arrangement of drawers and compartments, giving each part of the chest a considered purpose.
A gradual discovery
The name Fold describes the way the chest opens and reveals itself. Doors unfold to expose the interior, while drawers and a concealed compartment invite further discovery.
The wooden hinges are central to the design. Each was made and fitted by hand, with close attention to its movement and its relationship to the surrounding structure. Resolving these connections and maintaining precision throughout the build was one of the project’s greatest challenges.
Selecting the walnut
The client had a clear preference for walnut, a material I particularly enjoy working with. Early in the process, I shared photographs of the actual boards available in my workshop, allowing him to take part in selecting the wood.
The choice became a conversation about the grain and character of the individual boards, and how they would contribute to the finished piece.
A personal commission
A focused design period established the direction before making began. Throughout the build, I shared photographs and videos from the workshop, allowing the client to follow the progress and see the details taking shape.
We remained in close contact, with his feedback informing a small number of adjustments along the way. From the selection of the walnut to the arrangement of the interior, the chest developed through this exchange.
